About the Tour

Step into the past and discover Surrey’s Heritage Rail history on a behind-the-scenes guided tour. The Tour is a hands-on experiential event that takes about an hour. You step into the past and learn and see the very interesting history of the B.C. Electric Railway.

You will see a fast-moving documentary of the railway that dominated the transportation landscape for 50 years.

View the ongoing restoration of historic BCER Interurban railcars. See the work up close, ask questions!

Experience the thrill of operating the Interurban using the Motorman’s Simulator. You become the motorman!

Fancy yourself on a wayside track gang? Operate our Family Quad Car and Velocipede! These rail vehicles were used by railway service personnel (also known as gandy dancers) for railroad inspection and maintenance. Find out how it feels to propel yourself down the track! When you’re worn out from working on the track gang, let us give you a ride on our Honey Bee Express which was used also for minor repairs and inspections.

Tours are approximately one hour long. Visitors can take in the Sullivan Excursion Train Ride and Discovery Centre Tour on the same day, or if timing is limited, come back and visit us again!

The Motorman’s Simulator

Experience the thrill of driving an electric railcar. Sit in the seat of our latest exhibit. The Motorman’s Simulator is a mock-up of the controls of an interurban railcar. The speed controller, brake handle, whistle, bell and a large screen where video simulates the trains movement.

A virtual experience you will never forget!

The Quad Car

Our volunteers designed and built a family hand-operated cart. The family Quad Car is geared to ensure vigorous, yet safe, fun for the family. Operating the hand levers, families direct the cart safely down the tracks. Sometimes it’s hard to stop the laughter.

Come give it a try!

The Honey Bee Express

Buzz down the tracks on the Honey Bee Express chasing the interurban railcar. When you catch up to it, you watch it switch onto the main track. The interurban then switches direction and runs past the Honey Bee Express tooting its horn and waving.

The Honey Bee Express is a refurbished speeder which originally was used by maintenance people on the railway. We built passenger cars for it to pull and therefore it becomes the Honey Bee Express.

Come and experience a close-to-the-track ride!

The Velocipede

The Velocipede is a one-person, self-propelled maintenance vehicle. We found ours sitting in a local garden holding flower pots. At first we did not know what it was. Doing the research we found pictures and determined how it was supposed to be used. A winter’s worth of work and we had a fully operational vehicle. As part of our tour you will get to drive the velocipede. If you have small children, they can safely ride as passengers. This is one of our most popular experiences.

As a unique souvenir you will earn a button that says ”I Rode The Velocipede”. Wear it with pride!

Children must be 4ft 6ins tall to ride the velocipede.
